PACE UNIVERSITY HOLDS 2008 SENIOR STUDENT ATHLETE AWARDS BANQUET

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University Athletics Department held its annual senior student athlete awards banquet last Saturday night, May 3rd, at the Ann & Alfred Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center on Pace's Pleasantville Campus. Forty-nine Pace senior student athletes from 15 sports were honored at the event. Twenty student athletes were also inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma New York XI Chapter of the National College Athlete Honor Society, which was founded in 1996 as a student-athlete honor society for the recognition of athletes at the collegiate level who are high academic achievers, good citizens and possess good moral character. The honoree must be a junior or senior letter-winner with an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher.

The banquet also included six major awards on the night, the Honorary Letter-Winner Award, the Merit Award, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Golden Megaphone Award, the Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards and the Darrell Halloran Memorial Letter-Winner Award. The Honorary Letter-Winner Award is presented to an individual outside the athletics department who has contributed to the athletics department in an exemplary manner. The Merit Award goes to a student athlete who combines excellence on the field with quality in the classroom. The Golden Megaphone Award is presented to a person or persons that have gone above and beyond when attending Pace athletic events in support of the student-athletes. The Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards go to the athlete or athletes for outstanding athletic performance, can be from any class (Fr., So., Jr., Sr.) and should be one who best exemplifies the Pace University spirit on and off the playing area. The Darrell Halloran Memorial Award is named after Coach Halloran, a former Pace Men's Basketball Coach from 1983-1998, who tragically passed away at halftime during a basketball game on Pace's New York City campus. This award goes to a senior who contributed the most to Pace University and the Athletics Department through athletic and scholastic achievement, leadership and team spirit.

Rob Castorina was given the Honorary Letter-Winner Award for his tireless effort working with Pace student athletes as a physical therapist. The Golden Megaphone Award was given to two deserving individuals in Joe Streany Sr., father of Joe Streany Jr., a football and lacrosse student athlete, and Janine Vero (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman), a senior cheerleader. Mr. Streany has been heavily involved in the Pace athletics department creating a parents club for football and lacrosse, as well as attending every football and lacrosse game and putting on a barbeque after every game. Vero was honored for her tireless effort working to promote Pace athletics in the community.

The 2008 Merit Award was given to Nicole Papaioannau (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) from the Equestrian team. Papaioannau has been one of Pace's top riders and a solid all-around leader. She was a Regional Qualifier after another solid senior season, the team representative to SAAC and posted a 3.8 GPA as an English and Communications Major.

The 2008 Male Athlete of the Year was Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep), a four-year member of the Baseball team and senior captain. Cawley, a two-time NE-10 First Team selection as well as an All-Region selection, has excelled once again this year, leading the team in nine offensive categories, including batting average, homeruns and stolen bases. He currently ranks third in school history in career hits, fifth in doubles and fourth in stolen bases.

The 2008 Female Athlete of the Year was Natalija Subotic (Bradenton, FL/Edison Academic) from the Women's Tennis team. Subotic has dominated her sport over the last two seasons, losing only two matches over the time. This season, she posted a 13-1 overall record and was 11-1 in conference play, on her way to being the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year.

The 2008 Darrell Halloran Award winner was Joe Streany (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon), a four-year member of the football and lacrosse team. He set two school records in football for tackles and fumbles recovered in one season. He also led Division II in tackles, earning First Team All-NE-10 and Second Team All-Region honors. He was also First Team All-Academic and CoSIDA All District with a 3.64 GPA as a Professional Studies major. He also served as the President of SAAC for the 2007-08 year.
