SETTERS TAKE TWO FROM BLOOMSBURG TO COMPLETE SWEEP


BLOOMSBURG, PA- The Pace University baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader to complete a three-game sweep of Bloomsburg College.  Pace improves to 13-5 overall while Bloomsburg drops to 3-16 on the season.  Pace took the first game, 8-0, before winning the nightcap, 7-4.

In the first game, Brian Hollrah (Glenwood, MD/Glenely) doubled with one out in the 2nd inning and scored on a single by Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/ Brentwood) to put the Setters out front, 1-0.  The Setters would take a 2-0 lead after Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/ Clarke) singled to score Harwood.

Pace tacked on another run in the 5th inning after Chris Brown (West Kingston, RI/ South Kingstown) reached on an error by the shortstop to lead off the inning.  Barracato then followed with a single, moving Brown to third base.  Brown would score on a sacrifice fly by JC Pullum (White Plains, NY/ Valhalla) to give Pace a 3-0 lead after five.  Hollrah would score again in the 6th inning on a passed ball to put Pace up 4-0.

In the top of the 7th, Matt Arburr’s (Bristol, CT/ Bristol Eastern) double scored Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/ Trumbull) and Pullum.  Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/ Iona Prep) would score on an error by the third baseman and Arburr would score on an error by the shortstop.

On the mound, David Qualben (Brooklyn, NY/ Xavier) improved to 3-1 with a two-hit complete game.  Qualben walked two while striking out eight.  Overall, Liscinsky was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Harwood was 3-for-4 with two RBI.  Hollrah finished the day with two doubles and two runs scored.

In the second game of the doubledip, Pace trailed for the first time in the series, 1-0, after three innings. In the top of the 4th, Cawley led off with a single to left field.  Arburr would reach on a fielder’s choice as Cawley was put out at second.  Mike Pahira (Holmdel, NJ/ Holmdel) then reached third after an error by the third baseman, which scored Arburr to tie the game, 1-1.  Matt Bisbano (Mt. Kisco, NY/ Fox Lane) would drive Pahira home to give Pace a 2-1 lead. 

In the 5th, Ray Caronia (Paramus, NY/ Paramus) and Liscinsky each reached base, followed by a RBI double by Harwood.  Liscinsky would score on a passed ball, which also moved Harwood to third.  Cawley then followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that would score Harwood and give Pace a 5-1 lead, heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Bloomsburg managed to cut the Setter lead to 5-3 after five and then pulled with a run at 5-4 after the 6th.  In the 7th, Harwood led off the inning with a single to right field.  After Cawley reached on an error by the pitcher, Arburr followed with a two-run double, scoring Harwood and Cawley. 

On the mound for Pace, freshman Nick DeMeo (Farmingville, NY/ Sachem East) took the no decision after allowing two hits over the first two innings.  Douglas Wenz (Trumbull, CT/ Trumbull) picked up his first collegiate victory after pitching a hitless 4th inning.  Earl Oakes (Bristol, CT/ Bristol Eastern) pitched the final two innings to pick up his 5th save of the season. 

Pace returns to action when they travel to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday, March 28th to take on the Greyhounds of Assumption College in the Setters’ Northeast-10 Conference opener, set for 3:00 p.m.
