PENMEN BEAT PACE, 3-2; 2ND GAME POSTPONED
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sophomore Ryan
Thompson (Westford, MA) went 3-for-4 with a RBI and senior
Joe Johnson (Pelham, NH) scattered six hits over
seven innings to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 3-2
victory over Pace University here today in Northeast-10 Conference
baseball action. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called
in the top of the first inning due to rain. The teams will
conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader at Pace tomorrow
(4/2) starting at 11 a.m.
SNHU, which is ranked fourth in New England and ninth in the
Northeast among Division II schools, improved to 13-4 overall and
4-1 in the NE-10. SNHU has won eight of hits last 10 games.
Pace, which is ranked fourth in the Northeast, saw its five-game
winning streak come to an end and dropped to 15-6 overall and 2-1
in the league.
The Penmen opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Thompson
lined a leadoff double to leftfield, advanced to third following a
walk and sacrifice bunt by senior Tony Aucoin (Southbridge,
MA), and scored following a sacrifice fly by freshman
Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH).
SNHU opened up a 3-0 lead following a two-run second inning.
Thompson delivered a RBI single that plated senior Wayne
Parker (Manchester, CT) and freshman Matt
Greenberg (Norwell, MA) scored after senior
Chad Lawrence (Manchester, NH)
hit into a fielder's choice.
The Setters cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the
sixth. Sophomore Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT) lined a
two-out single and senior Mike Pahira (Holmdel,
NJ) followed with a homerun to left center. Pace had
runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the seven,
but Johnson got sophomore Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY)
to ground out to third to end the threat.
Lawrence went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI for the Penmen, while
Greenberg and fellow rookie Brandon Thomas
(Cornwall-Hudson, NY) both stroked singles for the hosts.
Seven different players recorded a hit for the Setters.
Senior Tom Boisjolie (Agawam, MA) relieved Johnson
in the eighth and allowed just one hit over the final two innings
to earn his first save of the year. Johnson, who improved to
2-0, allowed just two hits and six base runners over the first five
innings. Junior David Qualben (Brooklyn, NY) went
the distance for the Setters and dropped to 3-2. He settled down
after the second inning and allowed just three hits over his final
six innings. He retired nine-straight SNHU batters midway through
the game and finished with eight strikeouts.
