PENMEN BEAT PACE, 3-2; 2ND GAME POSTPONED

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sophomore Ryan Thompson (Westford, MA) went 3-for-4 with a RBI and senior Joe Johnson (Pelham, NH) scattered six hits over seven innings to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 3-2 victory over Pace University here today in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called in the top of the first inning due to rain.  The teams will conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader at Pace tomorrow (4/2) starting at 11 a.m.

SNHU, which is ranked fourth in New England and ninth in the Northeast among Division II schools, improved to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the NE-10. SNHU has won eight of hits last 10 games.  Pace, which is ranked fourth in the Northeast, saw its five-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 15-6 overall and 2-1 in the league.

The Penmen opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Thompson lined a leadoff double to leftfield, advanced to third following a walk and sacrifice bunt by senior Tony Aucoin (Southbridge, MA), and scored following a sacrifice fly by freshman Skyler Byrd (Milford, NH).

SNHU opened up a 3-0 lead following a two-run second inning. Thompson delivered a RBI single that plated senior Wayne Parker (Manchester, CT) and freshman Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) scored after senior Chad Lawrence (Manchester, NH) hit into a fielder's choice.

The Setters cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT) lined a two-out single and senior Mike Pahira (Holmdel, NJ) followed with a homerun to left center. Pace had runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the seven, but Johnson got sophomore Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY) to ground out to third to end the threat.

Lawrence went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI for the Penmen, while Greenberg and fellow rookie Brandon Thomas (Cornwall-Hudson, NY) both stroked singles for the hosts. Seven different players recorded a hit for the Setters.

Senior Tom Boisjolie (Agawam, MA) relieved Johnson in the eighth and allowed just one hit over the final two innings to earn his first save of the year.  Johnson, who improved to 2-0, allowed just two hits and six base runners over the first five innings. Junior David Qualben (Brooklyn, NY) went the distance for the Setters and dropped to 3-2. He settled down after the second inning and allowed just three hits over his final six innings. He retired nine-straight SNHU batters midway through the game and finished with eight strikeouts.
