EASTON, Mass.-- Senior All-America Billy Sittig (West
Roxbury, Mass.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter and struck out
nine to pick up his fifth win in seven decisions on the season as
Stonehill ran its winning streak to eight straight in posting a 6-2
Northeast-10 Conference baseball victory over Pace and completing a
sweep of a three-game set Monday afternoon at Gorman Field.
The host Skyhawks (19-11, 13-3 Northeast-10), winners of 10 of
their last 11 contests since April 1st, overcame an
early 2-0 deficit by evening matters in the third on a two-run
single by junior Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.), and Stonehill
took the lead for good in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by
juniors Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.) and Matt Vaughn (Bow,
N.H.). The hosts plated single insurance tallies in the sixth
on an error and in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior Adam
Pardo (Hanover, Mass.), and Sittig took care of the rest on the
mound for the Skyhawks, as he retired the final 12 batters he faced
and did not allow a hit after the third inning to improve to 5-2
and extend his school career strikeout record to 261.
The visiting Setters (21-12, 7-6 Northeast-10) got on the board with a pair of runs after two outs in the top of the first, as back-to-back walks set up a two-run double off the bat of senior Brian Hollrah (Glenwood, Md.), but that would prove to be all of the scoring for Pace on the afternoon. Freshman Nicholas DeMeo (Farmingville, N.Y.) allowed seven hits and four runs while fanning three in 4 2/3 innings of work on the mound for the visitors in suffering his first collegiate setback.
Vaughn went 3-for-5 on the day as part of Stonehill's nine hit attack, while Aldrich and Vigliotti each rapped out a pair of hits for the Skyhawks, who also received doubles off the bats of senior T.J. Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass.) and sophomore David Fradette (Goffstown, N.H.). Hollrah, graduate student Sunil Brijell (Buchanan, N.Y.) and senior JC Pullum (White Plains, N.Y.) each had a hit on the afternoon for Pace.
Pace returns to action when travel to North Andover, Mass. on Tuesday, April 18th to take on the Warriors of Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m.
