BASEBALL SWEEPS SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

PETERSBURG, VA- The Pace University Baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Saint Thomas Aquinas over the weekend, winning a Saturday doubleheader, 8-7 and 3-2, while completing the sweep on Sunday with a 6-3 victory. The Setters start the year off at 3-0, while the Spartans fall to 0-3 on the season.

In Game 1, Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) drove in a run in the first with an RBI single and later swatted a two-run homer in the sixth. Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) has a run scoring single in the eighth. However, the Setters still trailed 7-4 entering the ninth inning. Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) and Matt Rigoli (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) singled, while Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) drew a walk to load the bases. Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) came through with a clutch three-run double to tie the game, advancing to third on the throw home. Two batters later, Mullen scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) started, tossing five innings, allowing one run and one hit, while striking out eight. Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) pitched the final two innings of shut out, one-hit ball, to earn the win.

In Game 2, Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) and Cawley had back-to-back one out doubles to get the Setters on the board in the first. The following inning, Rigoli had a lead-off double, advancing to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a passed ball. Arburr hit his second homer of the afternoon, a solo shot in the sixth.

Angelo Fusaro (Stamford, CT/Westhill) started, pitching 4 2/3 innings of shutout and no-hit ball, while striking out six to pick up the win. Mike Mashrogiovani (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) closed out the game in the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.

In the series finale, Mullen lead off the second with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an error. The next inning, Barracato singled and moved to third on a double by Liscinsky. Arburr had another big hit, ripping a two-run single to left. Arburr proceeded to steal second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an error. In the sixth, Arburr led off the inning with a double and stole third. Mullen singled to right to drive in Arburr. The Setters would tack on a run in the seventh to complete the three-game sweep.

Nicholas DeMeo (Farmingville, NY/Sachem) started, hurling three shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. MacKenzie King (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) came on in relief, tossing three shutout innings, allowing two hits and no runs, while striking out three. Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) threw a shutout ninth innings to pick up the save.
