SETTERS DROP THREE-GAME SET TO CAL STATS SAN BERNARDINO
SAN BERNARDINO, CA- The Pace baseball team wrapped up their West Coast swing with a three losses to Cal State San Bernardino. Pace dropped the nail biter opener on Friday night, 4-3 and then lost both ends of a double dip on Saturday afternoon, 10-1 and 7-3. The Setters concluded their California trip at 2-7.
In the Friday night opener, Pace scored first as Ted Mullen led off the second inning with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Matt Arburr. The Coyotes pushed across a run in their half of the second to tie the score at 1. Pace retook the lead in the third as Joe Barracato led off with a single and moved to second on a walk by Neil Ross. Jack Cawley followed with a single to load the bases. Barracato would put the Setter back up, scoring on a wild pitch.
CSU San Bernardino pieced together three hits and crossed the plate three times in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. The Setters rallied in the ninth as Cawley drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Mullen. Arburr loaded the bases as he was hit by a pitch, moving pinch runner Denis Alimonti to second and Cawley to third. Vinny Dammann followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Cawley, cutting the Setter deficit to one at 4-3. The Coyotes held on as they turned a third to first double play to end the game.
For Pace, Dustin Corbett tossed six innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, while striking seven to drop to 2-2 on the season. Frank Luongo pitched a scoreless final two innings.
In the Saturday twin bill opener, the Setters fell 10-1 as the Setters were limited to six singles, with Andre Liscinsky collecting a pair of hits. Pace pushed across a run in the ninth, as pinch hitter Jimmy Frost walked to start the inning and pinch hitter Ray Caronia singled with one out. Frost and Caronia moved up a base on a wild pitch. Dammann drew a walk to load up the bases. J.J. Conrad singled to score Frost with the Setters lone run of the game.
On the hill, Nicholas Demeo started, going three innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) and seven hits, while fanning two. Kevin Vieira tossed a pair of scoreless innings while allowing only one hit. Salvatore DePaola went two innings, giving up four runs and seven hits. Doug Wenz tossed a scoreless one innings, only allowing one hit.
In the nightcap, the Setters struck first in the opening inning as Liscinsky lead off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. The Coyotes rallied in their half of the first, crossing the plate five times to take a 5-1 lead.
Pace cut their deficit in half in the fourth as Cawley and Mullen lead off with back-to-back singles. Aaron Zrenda reached on the fielder's choice, when the Coyote center fielder dropped his fly ball, but was able to force out Mullen at second. Cawley scored on a wild pitch, while Zrenda advanced to second. Zrenda moved to third on a ground out, and scored when Caronia ripped a single. Cal State San Bernardino added a pair of runs in their half of the fourth to push their lead back to four at 7-3.
For Pace, Justin Kanellis tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing five
runs on three hits, to go along with one strikeout. Michael Sheehy
pitched two-thirds of an innings, allowing two runs (one earned)
and a pair of hits. Eric Brown pitched the final 2 2/3 of scoreless
ball, fanning two.
