SETTERS RALLY IN THE NINTH; DEFEAT CONCORDIA 13-12
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) scored the game winning run to cap off a two-run ninth inning rally, as the Pace University baseball team defeated the Clippers of Concordia College, 9-2, at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville Campus of Pace University. The Setters improve to 9-12 on the season, while the Clippers fall to 4-10 overall.
Down 12-11 heading in the bottom of the ninth, senior Ray Caronia (Paramus, NY/Paramus) started the rally with a leadoff single. Caronia would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Kraminitz (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan Regional) and then to third on a single by Harwood. He would then score the tying run on a botched play by the second baseman as he failed to catch a pop fly hit by Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep). Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) followed with a walk that loaded the bases. Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) would then drive in the winning run on a frozen rope that handcuffed the third baseman, scoring Harwood.
Concordia drew first scoring a run to open the game on a sacrifice fly by Michael Gagliardi that scored Sam Golubov, who doubled to start the game. The Setters answered quickly scoring a run of their own in the first on an RBI single by Mullen scoring Cawley.
The Clippers would retake the lead in the very next inning as Jake Irwin's RBI single scored Peter Dempsey. Concordia would score another run later in the inning as Golubov drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Thomas Bordanaro.
Mullen would drive in his second run of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly in the third that scored Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican College). Pace took its first lead of the game scoring three runs in the fourth on Harwood's two-run single and Cawley's RBI single.
Concordia scored three runs of their own in the fifth, on an RBI single by Dempsey and a two-run single by Greg Conway. The Clippers added another two runs in the sixth, a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
The Setters would strike big in the seventh scoring five runs, highlighted by Arburr's two-run homerun, his seventh of the season and a two-run double by Ross. Arburr would hit his eighth homerun on the season and second homerun of the game in the eighth.
Picking up the win for Pace was MacKenzie King (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) (2-0), tossing 1.2 innings of relief giving up two walks, while striking out four. Zach Staniewicz took the loss for the visiting Clippers, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits, while walking one and fanning one.
