PLEASANTVILLE, NY - In their regular season finale, the Pace University baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose this afternoon at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville Campus of Pace University. The Setters were shutout in the opener 3-0, but came back in game two 6-3. The Setters end their regular season with an overall record of 28-24 (18-12 in the NE-10), while the Golden Knights end their season with a 16-29 record (13-17 in the NE-10).
Seniors Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood), Angelo Fusaro (Stamford, CT/Westhill), Ray Caronia (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) and Justin Kanellis (Lansing, NY/Lansing Central) were all honored before the game as part of Senior Day celebrations.
Fusaro (5-4) took the mound in game one, tossing seven innings allowing three runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out five. The Golden Knights opened the game scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Matt Frey (Clifton Park, NY) that scored Ryan Price (Binghamton, NY), who singled to lead off the inning. Saint Rose added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run double off the bat of Carlos Gomez (Santo Domingo, DR) that drove home Gary Miller (Prospect, CT) and Derek Marshall (Malone, NY). Michael Sheehy (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) pitched two innings in relief, allowing just a hit and a walk to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
Kevin Zuchorski (Cobleskill, NY) (3-1) picked up the victory for the visiting Golden Knights going seven shutout innings, allowing just six hits and a pair of walks, while striking out four. Chris Cahill (Saugerties, NY) earned his fifth save of the year, tossing two hitless innings surrendering a lone walk, while striking out three.
The Setters opened the nightcap scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) tripled to right field and came home on Matt Arburr's (Bristol, CT/ Bristol Eastern) RBI double. Arburr would come around to score on an RBI single from Aaron Zrenda (Niantic, CT/Loomis Chaffee Prep). Pace scored two more runs in the bottom of the second on a pair of walks with the bases loaded.
Saint Rose cut their deficit to one scoring a run in the third and a pair of runs in the fifth. Brad Polcare's (Saratoga Springs, NY) sacrifice fly to right brought home Mike Pagano (New City, NY) for the visitors first run of the game. Price's two-run double scoring Jake Perez (North East, PA) and Pagano made the game 4-3, but that's as close as the Golden Knights would get.
Cawley's third homerun of the season in the seventh and Joe Barracato's (Westbury, NY/Clarke) RBI single in the eighth scoring Dennis Alimonti (Jefferson Valley, NY) completed the 6-3 final.
MacKenzie King (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) (5-1) picked up the victory for the Setters tossing three innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, to go along with six strikeouts. Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) earned his seventh save of the season going three perfect innings, while fanning three.
