LOWELL, MA - The fourth seeded Pace University baseball team defeated the second seeded River Hawks of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 4-0, in the first elimination game of the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championship earlier today at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, MA. The Setters will be in action again tonight at 7 p.m. as they face the loser of today's second game between Bryant University and Franklin Pierce College.
Junior hurler Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (6-5) tossed a gem for Pace, pitching 7.1 shutout innings, scattering three hits and walking three, to go along with three strikeouts. Sophomore Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) completed the shutout to earn his ninth save of the season, striking out two in 1.2 perfect innings.
The Setters scored all of their runs in the top of the sixth. Junior Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) led off the inning with an infield single to third and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull). Matt Arburr's (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) RBI single to left drove home Cawley for the first run of the game. Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) followed with a walk as freshman Aaron Zrenda's (Niantic, CT/Loomis Chafee) two-run double to left brought home both Arburr and Mullen. Dennis Alimonti (Jefferson Valley, NY/Lakeland) replaced Zrenda coming into the game as a pinch runner. Alimonti advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the final run of the game on an RBI infield single up the middle off the bat of Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Walter Panas). Ross finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Taking the loss for the hosts was Peter Nickerson (6-3), who
