SETTERS MOVE TO 5-1 WITH WIN OVER PURCHASE
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Matt Rigoli (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) collected three hits and three RBIs as the Setters cruised to a 9-1 win over Purchase College in non-conference action. The Setters improve to 5-1, while the Panthers drop to 1-3 on the season.
Pace picked up a run in the opening inning as Rigoli drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. In the second, Chris Brown (West Kingston, RI/South Kingston) led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) reached on an infield single and eventually came around to score on a Cawley base hit. The Setters tacked on two more in the third inning as Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Panas) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third. With one out, Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) walked. Dammann would drive in Ross with a single and Barracato would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern).
The Setters would score two more runs in the fourth as Brown drove in Cawley with a base hit. Pace would load the bases and score again as Damman was hit by a pitch, driving in Ross.
Purchase tallied their lone run in the fifth as the first three batters reached safely to load the bases with no outs. Following a fielder's choice forcing Dominick Simone (Shirley, NY) out at the plate, the Panthers would push across their lone run on a wild pitch by the Setters' Salvatore DePaola (East Meadow, NY/Kellenberg Memorial), scoring Joshua Leon (Bronx, NY).
Pace would add a run in the fifth and one more in the seventh to cap the scoring on the afternoon.
For Pace, Dammann went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored one run, while Spatkowski collected a pair of hits and scored one run and drove in one. On the mound, Kevin Vieira (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) started, tossing 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts without allowing a hit or run. DePaola came on in relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and struck out one, earning his first win of the season. Aaron Zrenda (Niantic, CT/Loomis Chaffee Prep) tossed two scoreless innings, while Michael Franza (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) struck out the side in his lone inning of work. Dane Doucette (Middletown, NY/Middletown) pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.
Pace returns to action when they host the University of New
Haven of Wednesday, March 12 for a non-conference game scheduled
for 3 pm first pitch.
