BASEBALL HOLDS OFF NEW HAVEN 3-2
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and striking out four to lead the Setters past the Chargers of New Haven 3-2. The Setters improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Chargers remain winless at 0-8.
The Setters did all their damage in the second as Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Panas) singled with one out and moved to second on a groundout. Pace then ripped off four consecutive hits as Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) tripled to left-center scoring Ross for the first run of the game. Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) drove in Barracato with a single with right field. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) reached on a bunt single, moving Dammann to second. Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) lined a single to right-center, scoring Dammann for the Setters third and final run of the afternoon.
New Haven got on the board in the fifth as Chad Lemos (North Dartmouth, MA) singled with one out. Cesar Garrido (New York, NY) followed with a single, moving Lemos to third. Dan Rosa (Bristol, CT) drew a walk to load the bases. Nick Sperounis (Lawrenceville, GA) came through with the big hit for the Chargers as he singled to right field, driving in Lemos and Garrido. Corbett forced the next two batters into ground outs and kept the lead for the Setters. The Chargers threatened again in the seventh, getting a runner to second with one out but the combo of Corbett and reliever Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/West Harrison) were able to retire the side. New Haven didn't get a runner on base in the final two innings as Luongo closed out the game, earning the save and giving Corbett his first win of the season.
For the Setters, Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) collected a pair of hits on the day, including a first inning double. Corbett (1-0) struck out four in 6 2/3 innings of work for his first win of 2008, while Luongo tossed 2 1/3 of scoreless and hitless ball, with three strikeouts, picking up his first save of the season.
For New Haven, Lemos recorded a pair of singles on the day. On the hill, Vince Lehman (Groton, MA) (0-2) only lasted 1 2/3 innings allowing six hits and three runs. The Charger bullpen held the Setters scoreless as Dan Blake tossed 5 1/3 with seven strikeouts, allowing no hits or runs. Dan Johnson pitched the final inning only allowing one hit.
Pace returns to action when they travel to Wilmington, DE to
take on regional rival Wilmington University for a three game
series scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15 at noon
and a single game on Sunday, March 16 at 12:00 pm
