SETTERS CONTINUE SOLID PLAY AT HOME DROPPING BENTLEY 5-3
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University baseball is playing their best ball of the season, and it couldn't at a better time, as the Setters picked up another huge win over the Falcons of Bentley University on Sunday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Setters have won four of their last six games, and are now 11-6-1 at Finnerty Field this season.
The win will improve Pace to 17-22-1 for the season, and 11-12 in the NE-10 Conference. The loss drops the Falcons to 21-18 for the year, and 12-8 in conference play.
Bentley got on the board first in the top of the second inning as the Falcons strung together two runs on two hits off Pace starter Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (2-2) to take a 2-0 lead.
The Pace offense came right back in a very big way in the bottom half of the second inning scoring five runs on six hits to give Pace the lead at 5-2. Joe Cotone Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland) led off the inning with a rocket down the left field line that went for a double. Kenny Wright (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) followed that with a single to the pitcher to put runners on first and second with no outs. Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) kept the hits coming with a single to right field to load the bases with no outs. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) got Pace on the board with an RBI single up the middle to keep the bases loaded still with no outs. Steven Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/ Connetquot) drove in the second Setter run with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 2-2. Pace went on to score three more runs in the inning off an RBI fielder's choice by JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley), and an RBI groundout to the pitcher by Denis Alimonti (Jefferson Valley, NY/ Lakeland.
Tamburino settled down after the second inning and pitched five solid innings for Pace giving up two runs on four hits. He also struck out four, and walked three on the day.
The Pace bullpen did an outstanding job in relief of Tamburino going four innings of four hit ball. Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) came in to get one out in the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season, and to give Pace the 5-3 win.
The Setters will be back in action on Tuesday, April 21 as they will travel to Rindge, NH to take on Franklin Pierce University. The game is scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m.
