FOOTBALL DROPS TO STONEHILL
EASTON, MA - The Pace football team fell to Stonehill, 23-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference game played under the lights at Stonehill College. The Setters drop to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while the Skyhawks improve to 2-0 overall and in the NE-10.
The Setters took the opening possession and on its first play from scrimmage, quarterback Ray Gregg (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) threw an interception down the left sideline. On Stonehill's first play following the pick, Skyhawks signal called Cruz Parsons connected with JJ Niamkey on a 67-yard score to take a 7-0 lead 23 seconds into the game. Parson and Niamkey would repeat that feat midway through the second quarter, this time hooking up for a 34-yard touchdown to move ahead 14-0. The Skyhawks would get a 39-yard field goal from Sean Donahue to take a 17-0 lead into the break.
The Setters had their best scoring opportunity on their last possession of the first quarter when they drove down to the Stonehill 19-yard line, where Josh Trumper (Pine Grove, NJ/Toms River South) missed a 37-yard field goal attempt in the early part of the second quarter.
The Skyhawks would tack on another touchdown drive midway through the final quarter, using a 9-play, 67-yard drive capped off by a Jeffrey Payne 7-yard run to take a 23-0 lead and seal the game for Stonehill.
For the Setters, Gregg finished with 167 yards in the air on 19-for-37 passing, along with a pair of interceptions. Gregg was also sacked five times in the game. The Setters rushing attack was limited throughout the game as the six rushers were credited with 49 total yards on the ground. Matt Cooney (East Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway) led the Setters receiving corps, totaling eight catches for 61 yards.
Defensively for Pace, Joseph Streany (Croton, NY/Croton Harmon) led the Setters with nine total tackles (eight solo), while also recovering a Skyhawk fumble. Lee Robinson (New Milford, CT/New Milford) totaled eight tackles, including three for losses of seven yards, while also recorded two quarterback sack and also blocked the extra point on Stonehill's final touchdown. Ricky McCollum (Newburgh, NY/UConn), Greg Brain (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) and Brian Schuster (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) each had seven total tackles. Schuster also forced a fumble and had two pass breakups.
The Setters return to action when they host Saint Anselm College
in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday, September 22 for
12:00 p.m. kickoff at Pace Field on the Pleasantville campus.
