SETTERS FALL TO SNHU, 85-73

 

MANCHESTER, NH –  The Pace University men’s basketball team lost to Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast – 10 Conference match-up tonight. Five players reached double figures in points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to the 85-73 victory over the Setters.  Pace drops to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE – 10, while SNHU improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.  

Senior P.J. Young (Boston, MA) led the way for the Penmen with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Modestas Riauka (Kaunas, Lithuania) also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.

A key stretch in the game came late in the first half.  SNHU held a 36-32 lead with just over four minutes left before the break, when a three-pointer by freshman L.J. Hunter (Cumberland, RI) sparked the Penmen on a 14-2 run.  A three-pointer by sophomore Fotis Loiutas (Thessaloniki, Greece) with two seconds left in the half capped the run and gave the hosts a 50-34 halftime lead.

The Penmen maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half, before the Setters staged a late rally.  Pace cut the lead to single digits, 76-67, following a three-pointer by sophomore Ryan Williams (Centreville, PA) with 2:10 left to play, but the Penmen followed with two free throws by Young with 1:48 left. The hosts secured the win by hitting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe over the final minute.

Hunter finished with 12 points for the Penmen, while senior John Baiano (Staten Island, NY) added 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Sophomore Maurice Douglas (Waldorf, MD) led Pace with 14 points, while freshman Randy Williams (Peekskill, NY) added 12 points and seven rebounda.

The Penmen connected on just 7-of-24 three-pointers in the game, but made 20-of-26 from the free throw line.  Pace also struggled from long range, hitting just 3-of-19 from behind the arc.
Pace returns to action on Sunday, November 27, when they host Assumption College at 1:30pm at the Pleasantville campus.
