MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SAINT ANSELM, 81-69
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University men's basketball team suffered from an off-shooting night as the Setters fell to the Hawks of Saint Anselm College, 81-69, in a Northeast-10 Conference match this afternoon at the Goldstein Health, Fitness & Recreation Center in Pleasantville, NY. Pace falls to 9-11 overall, 8-7 in the NE-10, while the Hawks improve to 9-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
Senior guard Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) scored a game-high 22 points shooting 5-for-11 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from three and 10-for-12 from the free throw line. His 10 free throws made on the day tied a single game career-high. Williams also added five assists, five rebounds and four steals. Classmate Gibraltar White (Gautier, MS/Gautier) added 18 points on 5-for-16 shooting, including 3-for-10 from three and a perfect 5-for-5 from the line. Junior Randy Wilson (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) recorded a double double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Hawks had six players score in double figures led by senior Chris Vetrano's (Andover, MA) team-high 20 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the line. Vetrano also dished out a game-high 11 assists for the double double to go with five steals. Freshman Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, CT) added 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three. St. Anselm finished the game with 12 three pointers for the game. Rounding out the Hawks offense was sophomore Greg Vetrano (Andover, MA) with 12 points, freshman John Tello (Ridgefield Park, NJ) with 11 points and senior Junior Mitchell (Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore Giovanni Carenza (East Hanover, NJ) who both finished the game with 10 points apiece. Carenza also brought down a team-high 10 rebounds for the double double.
St. Anselm came out of the blocks firing as the Hakws began the game on a 14-1 run. Chris Vetrano sparked the run with a pair of threes, while Baudinet added five points. The Setters would score their first bucket of the game on a jumper by Williams at the 14:12 mark, which made the game 14-3. Pace would battle back cutting the lead to single digits and eventually take the lead, using a 20-7 run which put the Setters up by two, 23-21. White sparked the run scoring eight of the 20 points, including the final three as he hit all three of his free throws after being fouled attempting a three-pointer. Pace's lead would not last long as Mitchell answered with a three-pointer to put the Hawks back up 24-23. Up by one, 26-25, Greg Vetrano would give St. Anselm a comfortable seven-point lead, 32-25, heading into the break as he scored six straight points on a three pointer and an and-one play converting his free throw after being fouled on a made lay-up.
The Hawks would begin the second half on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 14, 39-25, and never looked back as the Setters were unable to cut their deficit back to single digits. Tello sparked the run scoring five of the seven points. The Hawks shot a blistering 75.0% (15-for-20) from the field in the second half, including 7-for-10 from three and a perfect 12-for-12 from the line as St. Anselm cruised to the 81-69 victory.
For the game, Pace shot 38.2% (21-for-55) from the field, including 5-for-19 (26.3%) from three and 73.3% (22-for-30) from the line. Saint Anselm was red-hot shooting 61.4% (27-for-44) from the field, including 12-for-21 (57.1%) from three and 88.2% (15-for-17) from the charity stripe. Rebounds were even at 29 boards apiece.
The Setters will look to bounce back this Tuesday, February
5th, as Pace will travel to Syracuse, NY to take on the
Dolphins of Le Moyne College in a Northeast-10 Conference battle.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
