PACE RUNS PAST SAINT ANSELM IN OT 83-77
MANCHESTER, NH - The Pace men's basketball team used a 10-0 run in overtime to post an 83-77 win over the Hawks of Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Setters improve to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10, while the Hawks drop to 3-4 and 3-3 in conference play.
The teams battled early with the Setters grabbing a one-point lead midway through the opening period. Pace ripped off a 15-3 run to take a 29-16 lead with just over five minutes left in the half. Saint Anselm would rally using a 10-0 run over the final 2:34 to take the lead and go into halftime ahead 32-31 at the break.
The final period was a wild back and forth struggle as Pace took back the lead and build a 44-38 lead five minutes into the half. The Hawks would rally with a 13-2 run to a three-point lead and would extend their advantage to 63-56 with 5:55 left in the game. Pace countered with an 11-3 run keyed by a pair of jumpers by Gibraltar White (Gautier, MS/Gautier) and was capped by a Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) three-pointer to put Pace in the lead by one at 67-66 with 3:02 left in the game. Laurence McGhee (Linden, NJ/Linden) would put the Setters up three before Saint Anselm would tie the game at 69 on a trifecta by John Tello. The teams would trade baskets down the stretch and would end regulation tied at 73.
In the extra period, the Setters would win the tip-off and fail to score on their first possession. The Hawks would take the lead on a Tello lay-up. The Setters would put the game away, racing away with a 10-0 run to take an 83-75 lead with under 30 seconds to play and posted the road conference victory.
For Pace, Williams scored a game-high 22 points, while chipping in seven boards and six assists, while 6-for-14 from the field and 8-for-9 from the charity stripe. White finished with 18 points, while McGhee tallied 14 points and five assists on 6-for-11 shooting. Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, NY/Rye) posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
For Saint Anselm, Lewis Thompson recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Junior Mitchell also scored 16 points off the bench. Tello tallied 16 points and eight rebounds, while Chris Vetrano totaled 13 points and five assists.
Pace returns to action when they host the Pace Holiday Classic
on Friday, December 28 and Saturday December 29. On Day 1 of the
tournament, Merrimack College will play Caldwell College at 5 pm
and the Setters will play Bloomfield at 7 pm. The next day,
Bloomfield will face Merrimack at 5 pm and Pace will wrap up the
classic when they play Caldwell at 7 pm.
