SETTERS FALL SHORT IN NE-10 LOSS TO PENMEN
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Carlos Howard (Fort Washington, MD/Gonzaga High) led the Setters with 20 points, (14 in the second half) as the Pace fell 65-63 to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters fall 7-10 on the season and 5-7 in the NE-10, while the Penmen improve to 10-7 and 7-5 in conference play.
The Setters and Penmen went back and forth for most of the opening half before Pace took a seven point advantage with about two minutes left. The Penmen would score the final six points of the first half and trailed Pace by one 32-31 at the break.
Southern New Hampshire would jump ahead to start the second half, leading by as many as five midway through the final period. The Setters would battle back as Ryan Woods (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's), Adrian Mills (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI) and Howard each nailed triples to pull the Setters even at 54. The Penmen would hit a pair of free throws and a lay-up by Laurence McGhee (Linden, NJ/Linden) tied the score at 56. The Penmen would rally with six unanswered points to take a 62-56 lead with 3:35 left. Mills would hit 1-of-2 from the line and Woods would convert a lay-up to slice their deficit back to three points with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
The teams would trade baskets in the final 20 seconds to keep the Penmen up three with 11 seconds left. Southern New Hampshire would hit a free throw to go up by four points but a Howard lay-up with four seconds slice the score to two points. The Penmen would miss the front end of a 1-and-1 with two seconds left but a final Setter shot would come up short as time expired.
For Pace, Howard led all scorers in the game with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 6-for-9 from downtown. McGhee tallied 14 points, five boards and four assists, while Woods finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Delroy Daley (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) led Pace with eight rebounds.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, January 23 when Pace will host the Warriors of Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference game at 3:30 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center on Pace's Pleasantville campus.
