SETTERS PULL OFF UPSET WIN
OVER RIVER HAWKS IN FINAL MINUTE
MILLS' JUMPER GIVES SETTERS THE LEAD WITH 26 SECONDS LEFT
LOWELL, MA- Pace sophomore Adrian Mills (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI) led the Setters offense by scoring a game-high 21 points, including a game winning jumper with 26 seconds left in the game to give Pace a 68-67 lead, ultimately leading the Setters to a 72-67 win over the River Hawks of UMass Lowell. The win improves Pace's record to 9-10 overall and 7-7 in the NE-10. For the River Hawks, the loss drops their record to 12-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
The two schools dueled to a tie at 14, which would quickly end after UMass Lowell's Kyle Caiola drained a free throw to give the River Hawks a one point lead. The Setters would soon take a one point advantage of their own, and eventually give themselves a 12 point lead which they held until halftime with the score 38-26.
Pace would maintain a double-digit lead through the first eight minutes of the second half, until the River Hawks cut their deficit to within nine with the score 48-39. An 8-3 run would bring Lowell to within four of Pace for a 51-47 score.
Another scoring run for Pace would give the Setters a 15 point 64-49 lead with 6:46 left. While the Setters seemed to have the game in hand, the River Hawks were still able to rally back with an 18-2 run to give themselves a 67-66 lead with 49 seconds left.
After Mills gave the Setters the lead with his epic jumper, sophomore Delroy Daley (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond HS) drained two free throws to give Pace a three point lead with 11 seconds on the clock. A missed three pointer by the River Hawks, led to a Mills layup on a fast break as time expired to give Pace the victory.
The key stat in the match up was the shooting for both teams, the Setters shot a solid 49 percent from the field in the game, while the River Hawks were only able to sink 29 percent of their shots.
Along with Mills, Ryan Woods (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's Boys) was also a key contributor for the Setters finishing the game with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Laurence McGhee (Linden, NJ/Linden) also had a solid performance by dishing out a game-high seven assists. With this performance, McGhee has now given himself 451 assists for his career which ties him with former Setters Ernie Simons for second on Pace's All-Time Assists List.
Daley had double-double for the second consecutive game, scoring 12 points and taking down a team-high ten rebounds.
The Setters will be returning to action on Saturday, January 30 when they come back home to face off against the Falcons of Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference game set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Pace's Goldstein Fitness Center on the Pleasantville Campus.
