LACROSSE FALLS TO #1 LE MOYNE, 16-3
SYRACUSE, NY - The Pace University men's lacrosse team fell to the defending national champion Dolphins of Le Moyne College, 16-3, in a Northeast-10 Conference match up this afternoon. The Setters fall to 6-5 on the season and an even 3-3 in the NE-10, while the Dolphins remain perfect at 10-0 overall, 7-0 in conference play. Le Moyne is currently ranked #1 in the latest USILA Division II Coaches' Poll.
Red shirt sophomore Jake Sheppard (Brunswick East, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/East Victoria) netted the first goal of the game at the 10:08 mark of the first quarter to put the Setters up 1-0. The Dolphins would answer with the equalizer from Alex Bily at the 5:40 mark and would later take the lead right before the end of the first quarter as Brian Cost's goal with 1:26 left in the first put Le Moyne up 2-1 heading into the second quarter.
Nick Gatto opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal at the 13:01 mark to put the Dolphins up 3-1. Junior T.J. Urban (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) cut Pace's deficit to one as his goal with 6:27 left before the half made the game 3-2. That's as close as the Setters would get as the Dolphins rattled off 10 straight goals as they netted three straight to take a 6-2 lead heading in to the break and then seven straight to begin the third quarter. Sophomore James Hammel (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) ended the Setters scoring drought netting Pace's third and final goal with 2:45 left in the third.
Cost led the way for the Dolphins netting five goals on the day, while Gatto added three goals.
Junior goalkeeper Timothy Matheis (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) played all 60 minutes in net for Pace finishing with 17 saves in between the pipes. Doug McIver started in goal for Le Moyne logging in 53:59 minutes allowing three goals and turning away six shots, while Tom Kralovenec finished the game playing the final 6:01.
Pace returns to action this Thursday, April 17th, as
the Setters will play host to conference foe Merrimack College.
Start time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Pace Field on the
Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The Warriors are currently
tied for ninth in the USILA DII Coaches' Poll.
