Mirabito Nets Five Points to Lead Setters Past Bentley
PLESANTVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Matt Mirabito (Binghamton, NY/Broome CC) had three goals, and two assists to lead the Pace lacrosse team to a 9-6 victory over the Falcons of Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters improve to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Falcons fall to 1-4 overall, and 1-3 in the Northeast-10.
Frank Buffalino (Syosset, NY/Syosset) opened up the scoring for the Setters late in the first quarter on a man-up goal. The trend would continue into the second as Thomas Earl (North Babylon, NY/ St. Anthony's), and Mirabito stretched the Setters lead to 3-0 midway through the second quarter. Bentley responded with a goal on a man-up advantage, but Matt Gebhardt (West Islip, NY/West Islip) answered late in the half to push the Setters lead to 4-1 going into the break.
In the second half, the Falcons answered early cutting into the Setters lead 4-2, but Gebhardt and Mirabito would again stretch the Setters lead back up 6-3 at the end of the third. William Scioscia (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) pushed the Setters the lead to 7-3, on a goal just eight seconds into the final quarter.
The Falcons rallied with a furious comeback, cutting the Setters lead to 7-6 with 8:37 left in the game. Pace answered as Scioscia, and Mirabito closed the door on the Falcons, responding with two goals late to finish out the game.
For Pace, Gebhardt finished with two goals, three assists, and three groundballs, while Matthew Cossidente (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) finished with two assists, and three groundballs. Freshman Goalie Conor Brophy (Pompton Lakes, NJ/DePaul Catholic) recorded 19 saves in 60 minutes of work between the pipes.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday April 3 as they travel to Springfield, MA to face Yellow Jackets of American International College at 7:00 pm.
