Lacrosse Comes Up Short to Saint Rose 10-9
PLESANTVILLE, N.Y. – William Scioscia (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) netted four goals as the Setters fell to the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose 10-9 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Pace falls to 5-5 on the season and 2-5 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights improve to 3-8 and 3-4 in conference play.
The teams traded goals over the first half of the opening quarter as Matt Mirabito (Binghamton, NY//Broome CC) scored a goal, while Matt Gebhardt (West Islip, NY/West Islip) assisted on the goal and scored unassisted to tie the game at 2-2. The Golden Knights netted a pair of late goals to lead 4-2 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, Scioscia and Mirabito each scored for the Setters but Saint Rose tallied a goal as they held a 5-4 lead at halftime.
The Setters opened the second half strong as they took the lead on a pair of early goals. Thomas Earl (North Babylon, NY/St. Anthony's) scored at the 13:21 mark off a Gebhardt assist. Pace won the ensuing faceoff as Scioscia scored off a Mirabito assist to put the Setters in the lead at 6-5. The Golden Knights scored the next two goals to jump back in front at 7-6 but the Mirabito to Scioscia connection worked again with 2:05 left in the quarter to even the score at seven heading into the final quarter.
The Golden Knights scored a man-up goal early in the fourth but Gebhardt pulled the Setters back even off a Scioscia assist. Saint Rose netted the next two goals to go up 10-8 with 5:52 left in the game. Scioscia got his fourth goal of the day with just under a minute to play to pull the Setters to within a goal at 10-9. The Setters pushed the ball on offense and had a pair of shots in the waning seconds but fell short of the game-tying score.
For the Setters, Sciosica tallied four goals and one assist, while Mirabito and Gebhardt both finished with two goals and two assists. In net, freshman goalie Conor Brophy (Pompton Lakes, NJ/DePaul Catholic) recorded 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, April 13 as they travel to North Andover, MA for an NE-10 match-up against the Warriors of Merrimack College at 1 pm.
