PACE SPLITS WITH ST. ROSE; SHADA ONE-HITS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
BRIARCLIFF, NY - The Pace University softball team split a
Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with the College of Saint
Rose, with the Golden Knights taking the first game, 3-0, before
Pace took the backend of the twinbill, 2-0. Pace goes to 9-11
overall and 4-4 in the Northeast-10 while the College of St. Rose
goes to 3-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
In the first game, both pitchers threw well, but in the end St.
Rose's Kristen Calahan (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) came away with the
complete game shutout. Calahan held the Setters to four hits
over seven innings while striking out seven. Pace starter
Julia Hunt (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) allowed three
runs, all in the 5th inning, on eight hits over seven
innings.
In the 5th, St. Rose's Marlo Daniels (Troy, NY/Tamarac
English) led off with a single to center field and advanced to
second on a wild pitch. Cara Piccarreto (Rochester,
NY/Irondequoit) followed with a single to center, moving Daniels to
third base. After Piccarreto was caught stealing and Dana
Herchenroder (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) grounded out,
Elizabeth Cullen (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) reached base on
a bunt single, scoring Daniels. Kerry Monahan (East Meadow,
NY/East Meadow) then doubled to right field, scoring Cullen.
Monahan give St. Rose a 3-0 lead after she scored on a double down
the leftfield line by Samantha Harrington (South Glens falls,
NY/South Glens Falls). Daniels was 2-for-3 in the game with
one run scored.
In the second game, Pace freshman starter Kiryl Shada
(Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) took a no-hitter into the
7th inning before giving up a double to Calahan with one
out in the 7th. Shada improves to 3-2 on the year
after striking out five over seven innings while holding St. Rose
to one hit. Pace scored in the 4th inning when
Michelle Brigham (Unionville, NY/Minisink Valley)
led off the inning with a single to center field.
Sheila Mercado (Greeley, Co/Greeley West) reached
on an error by the second baseman, moving Brigham to second.
Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills,
CO./Conifer) sacrificed both runners over and
Patti Hurley's (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) fly ball
to left field was deep enough to score Brigham.
In the 5th, Carolyn Krause (Staten Island,
NY/Tottenville) walked with one out and then stole second
base. Krause advanced to third base on a passed ball and was
then driven in by a single by Brigham.
For the game, Brigham was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one
RBI. St. Rose starter Nicole Welch (Albany, NY/Colonie
Biology) was the hard-luck loser in the game after holding Pace to
four hits over six innings. Both runs scored by Pace were
unearned.
The Setters return to action when they host Bentley College on
Wednesday, April 12th in a Northeast-10 Conference
doubleheader slated for 3:00 p.m. at Pace Field on the Briarcliff
campus of Pace University.
