Setters post 4-0 victory in game one;
Ravens rebound with 5-2 victory in game two
 

RINDGE, N.H. (April 29, 2006) - The Franklin Pierce softball team split a pair of games with Pace University in a Northeast-10 doubleheader this afternoon at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. The Setters posted a 4-0 win in game one while the Ravens rebounded with a 5-2 victory in game two.

In game one, Pace University limited Franklin Pierce to six hits over seven innings to earn their 17th victory of the season. Setter pitcher, freshman Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) tossed a complete game shut-out, scattering six hits and striking out nine. Offensively, the Setters were led by freshman Patricia Hurley (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) who went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Sophomore Kelley Kinyon (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) also registered a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.

Franklin Pierce received solid offensive production from freshmen Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop Williams) and Jackie Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield). Matthews was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk while Prybella was 2-for-4 at the plate. Junior Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) and sophomore Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) each chipped in with one hit apiece.  

Pace scored all the runs it would need in the top of the fourth inning. After a walk and a single, sophomore DJ Ketchel (Staten Island, N.Y./Matawan Regional) laced a two-out double to drive home two Setter runs. Pace added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Setters took advantage of two Franklin Pierce errors and Hurley produced a RBI single.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Lindsay Knapp (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) suffered the loss for the Ravens. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out five.

In game two, Prybella and Giardina each registered multiple hits for Franklin Pierce. Prybella went 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and one RBI while Giardina was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and on RBI. Matthews chipped in with a double and two RBIs, while freshman Becky Savard(Gardner, Mass./Gardner) went 1-for-3 with one run scored.

Franklin Pierce freshman pitcher Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) kept the Pace batters in check all game, tossing a complete game two hitter, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine. Pace junior Carolyn Krause (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Ketchel combined for the two Setter hits.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as the Ravens totaled three runs on four hits. Giardina started the early rally with a lead-off single and was followed by back to back doubles from Prybella and Matthews. A Setter error later in the inning allowed Mathews to score to give the Ravens the 3-0 edge.

In the bottom of the fourth frame, Franklin Pierce tallied two more runs on three hits. Savard started the inning with a one-out single and advanced to second a wild pitch. After stealing third base, Savard was driven in by a Giardina bunt single to increase the Ravens lead. Pace tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but Jacobs retired the last three batters in order to secure the victory for Franklin Pierce.

            Pace junior right-hander Julia Hunt (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) suffered the loss for the Setters. Hunt tossed a complete game, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out four batters.
