SOFTBALL SWEPT BY DOWLING

BRIARCLIFF, NY - The Pace University softball team lost a pair of non-conference games against the Golden Lions of Dowling College by the scores of 5-4 and 14-2. The Setters fall to 7-5 on the season, while the Golden Lions improve to 10-13 overall.

Game one featured extra innings as each team battled for control. Pitching would be the key of the game as each starter was solid on the mound. Jacqueline Lucido (2-5) earned the win for the Golden Knights tossing seven strong innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits, giving up one walk, while striking out five.  Stephanie Plochochi picked up her first save of the season, pitching a scoreless eighth, giving up a pair of hits. Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) (4-2) was just as effective going the distance allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits, while surrendering four walks and fanning five in eight innings of work.

Dowling struck first scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. Lindsay Heinz opened the game with a leadoff walk and later advance to third on a single by Taras Wallace. Heinz would score as Kristina DeMeo reached base on a fielder's choice.  Wallace also scored as DeMeo was caught stealing second.

The Setters quickly tied the game at two as they scored a couple of their own runs in their half of the first as Carolyn Krause (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) and Amanda Dague (Spring, TX/Klein Collins) opened the inning with a pair of singles. Krause would score on a sacrifice fly by Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet), while Dague came around to score on an RBI double by Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills, CO/Conifer).  

The Golden Knights scored a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Jackie Hannan's RBI single scored Wallace in the sixth, Keri Boystak's RBI single scored Heinz in the seventh, while Lucido's single in the eighth scored Kristy Kobel, the would be game-winning run.

Game two was a complete opposite as Dowling took control early. DeMeo and Wallace, who combined for three homeruns and eight RBI's, powered the Golden Knights. DeMeo went 2-for-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored, highlighted by a pair a two-run homeruns. Wallace went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI's and three runs scored, highlighted by a grand slam in the fifth.

Hurley accounted for both Pace runs as she connected with a two-run homerun of her own in the fourth.

Plochochi (2-4) picked up the win for Dowling, giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out two in four innings. Taking the loss was Julia Hunt (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) (1-2) as she allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits, while giving up three walks.

Pace returns to action on Saturday, March 31st as the Setters open conference play hosting the Bulldogs of Bryant University in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Pace Field on the Briarcliff campus of Pace University.
