PACE SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH SAINT ANSELM

BRIARCLIFF, NY - The Pace University softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader with the Hawks of Saint Anselm College this afternoon at Pace Field on the Briarcliff campus of Pace University. The Hawks took the opener 10-6, while the Setters bounced back to take the nightcap 14-9.  Pace goes to 10-16 on the season, 3-9 in the NE-10, while Saint Anselm goes to 6-17 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

The Hawks acted as the home team for the doubleheader, as the games were originally supposed to be played in Manchester, NH, but were moved to Briarcliff for due to poor weather conditions.

The Setters struck first in game one scoring a run in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kelly Kinyon (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) that drove in Carolyn Krause (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), who led off the game with a double. The lead would not last long as the Hawks responded with a pair of runs the following inning. Andrea Crocker led off with a triple down the right field line and would come in to score on an RBI double by Moira McCabe. McCabe would come around to score on an RBI single from Megan Lemire.

Saint Anselm added another three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run triple to right center by Crocker that scored Nicole Baginski and Brittney Birch.  Crocker would also score on a throwing error by the second basemen.

Pace would cut their deficit scoring three runs of their own the following inning. D.J. Ketchel's (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) two-run double to left center scored Krause and Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman), who each singled down the right field line to reach base. Ketchel would later score on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Kinyon. The Hawks would extend their advantage once more, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Birch and a two-run single by Jocelyn Savastano. Saint Anselm would add another run in the sixth on a Birch RBI single.

The Setters would attempt a comeback scoring a pair of runs in the seventh put would fall short. Kinyon (0-4) took the loss for Pace, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, while surrendering four walks. Michaella Mahoney picked up the win for the Hawks, tossing four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out one. Katie Corey earned the save, pitching three innings in relief, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Game two featured even more offense as both teams combined for 23 runs on 29 hits. The Setters took control of the game early, scoring 11 runs through the first four innings. The Hawks would cut the deficit to 11-9 after six, but Pace would add another three runs in their final inning for the 14-9 final.

Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) led the Setter offense going 2-for-5 with three RBI's and a run scored.  Ketchel, Kinyon and freshman Kerri McLean (Woodhaven, NY/Archbishop Molloy) each drove in a pair of runs.

Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) (7-7) pitched the complete game to pick up the victory allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits, walking none and striking out five.

Jaclyn Kinsman (0-1) faced just four batters in the first inning and did not record an out allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits.

Pace returns to action on Tuesday, April 17th, as the Setters travel to Albany, NY to take on the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
