SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH NEW YORK TECH
OLD WESTBURY, NY- The Pace softball team split a twin bill with New York Institute of Technology taking the opener 2-1 and dropping the nightcap 9-2. The Setters stand at 11-17 overall while New York Tech sits at 14-12.
The opener featured a pitching duel between the Setters' Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) and the Bears' Nina Cesare as both tossed complete games. Pace scored in the opening inning as Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dana Jo Ketchel (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) reached base on an infield single, moving Pane to third. Ketchel later stole second. Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) singled up the middle to score Pane as Ketchel advanced to third. Hurley stole second and Ketchel scored on the play on a errant throw by the catcher. Ketchel's run proved to be an important score for the Setters as Shada allowed a solo homerun on the second and scattered four other hits in her seven innings of work to move her record back above the .500 mark at 8-7.
The Setters got on the board in the first again in the nightcap as Pane reached on a fielding error by the pitcher and scored on a two-out double by Hurley. Pace picked up another run in the third as Ketchel drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jessica Bryant (Brownstown, IN) came threw with two-out single to right field to score Ketchel and give the Setters a 2-0 lead.
NYIT took advantage of a Setter error in the third, scoring four unearned runs to take the lead. The Bears capitalized on another Setters error in the fifth scored two runs, with one being unearned. In the sixth, Pace committed two errors, allowing three runs to score for the Bears.
For Pace, Kim Troiano (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) was the tough-luck hurler, tossing five innings, giving up six runs (one earned), and seven hits, while fanning two, dropping her record to 2-3. Julia Hunt (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) came on in relief, pitching the final inning, giving up three hits and three runs (two earned).
