SOFTBALL FALLS TO #16 CALDWELL
CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior outfielder Carrie Flasphaler
(Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit three home runs on the day as the
Caldwell College softball team defeated Pace University, 11-3 and
10-2 in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Caldwell
Field. Flasphaler, who was one of three Cougars to homer on the
day, was 4 for 7 with seven runs batted in. With the sweep, the
16th-ranked Cougars improve to 26-10 on the year, while the Setters
drop to 12-22.
In Game 1, the Cougars took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run double
by senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). An RBI double
from Pace's Kerri McLean (Woodhaven,
NY/Archbishop Molloy) in the top of the third cut the lead
to 2-1 before Caldwell put five runs on the scoreboard in the
bottom of the third. Freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton,
NY/Susquehanna Valley) and junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo) each had RBIs in the inning, followed by Flasphaler's
two-run homer to left. After the Cougars loaded the bases, freshman
Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was hit by a pitch,
bringing home another run for a 7-1 advantage.
A single by freshman Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) in the top
of the fourth plated Speno to put Caldwell ahead 8-1. Pace answered
with two runs in the top of the fifth on RBIs from Carolyn
Krause (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville)
and Christina Pane (Stony Point,
NY/Cardinal Spellman) that made the score 8-3 Caldwell.
But in the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and third,
Flasphaler ended the game with a long home run to centerfield.
Senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) tossed
all five innings, giving up six hits and three runs (one earned)
while striking out three to improve to 11-7. Kiryl
Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper)
(9-9) absorbed the loss for the Setters allowing seven runs (five
earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out three in 2
1/3 innings.
The Cougars continued to hit the long ball in Game 2. After a pair
of singles in the bottom of the first, senior Stacy Falkowski
(Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) smacked a three-run shot for her
team-leading sixth of the season. Then Flasphaler followed a walk
by Speno with a homer to right field for a 5-0 lead, giving her a
home run in three of four at-bats. She now has four homers on the
season. Genovese drove in the Cougars' sixth run of the game with a
triple in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third,
Speno scored from third on an error for a 7-0 lead. After a walk by
freshman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) and a single by
Day, junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) blasted a
three-run homer to left to give Caldwell a 10-0 advantage. Bodrog's
home run ties her with Falkowski for the team lead with six.
Krause and Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills,
CO/Conifer) drove in runs for Pace in the top of the
fourth, but the Cougars held on to the eight-run lead through five
innings to wrap up the win. Sophomore Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St.
Agnes Academy) went the distance in the circle for the Cougars,
allowing four hits and two runs to improve to 7-2. Julia
Hunt (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) (1-4) took the
loss for Pace allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on nine hits walking
three in 2 1/3 innings.
The Setters return to action on Tuesday, April 24th, as Pace hosts the Dolphins of Le Moyne College in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
