SOFTBALL SNAPS NINE GAME SKID WITH SWEEP OF SAINT ROSE
ROTTERDAM, NY- Junior hurler Kelly Kinyon's (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) complete game three-hit shutout performance snapped the Setters nine game losing streak in the opener on their way to completing a double dip sweep of Saint Rose, taking the opener 2-0 and winning the nightcap 5-2 in 10 innings. The Setters improve to 14-26 overall and 5-15 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights drop to 11-18 and 6-13 in the NE-10.
In the opener, the pitchers were locked in a pitcher's dual as Kinyon and Golden Knight starter Kristen Calahan tossed lights-out ball. The Setters scratched out a pair of run in the fifth, taking advantage of two Saint Rose errors. With one out, Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) tripled and scored on the play on an error by the right fielder. Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) and Kerri McLean (Woodhaven, NY/Archbishop Molloy) followed with back-to-back two out singles with Hurley scoring on McLean's hit following a throwing error. That would be all the runs the Setters would need as Kinyon tossed a gem, striking out two along the way, earning her first win of the season.
In the nightcap, Saint Rose pushed across a run in the second inning to take an early lead. The Setters came right back in the third as Carolyn Krause (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) led off the inning with a solo blast to tie the game. Pace took the lead in the sixth as Kinyon ripped a one-out single and Julia Hunt (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) drove her in with a double. Saint Rose would eventually tie the game in the seventh to force extra innings. The score stayed tied until the tenth as Jessica Bryant (Brownstown, IN/Brownstown) started on second base. Hurley reached on a fielder's choice, moving Bryant to third. Pinch runner Amanda Dague (Spring TX/Klein Collins) advanced to second on a pop out. Bryant and Dague scored as Dana Jo Ketchel (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) double to left, moving to third in the throw home. Ketchel would score the third Setter run of the inning on an errant throw by the Golden Knights' catcher.
On the hill for Pace, Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) went the distance, allowing nine hits and two earned run, while fanning five on her way to earning her tenth win of the season.
The Setters return to action when they travel Manchester, NH to
take on Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern New Hampshire
University on Saturday, April 28 for a twin bill with first pitch
scheduled for 12:00 pm.
