SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
MANCHESTER, NH- The Pace softball team dropped a twin bill to Southern New Hampshire, 4-3 and 10-3 in five innings. The Setters drop to 14-28 overall and 5-17 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen improve to 21-9 and 18-6 in the NE-10.
In the opener, the Penmen used in the long ball as Ashley Bernstein hit a three-run homer to give Southern New Hampshire a lead in the third inning. In their next at-bat, the Setters rallied eventually tying the score, as Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) drew a lead-off walk, while Jessica Bryant (Brownstown, IN/Brownstown) reached on an infield single. Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Pane to reach third and score on the play on an error by the Penmen third baseman. Back to back singles by Kelly Kinyon (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) and Dana Jo Ketchel (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) allowed Bryant and Hurley to cross the plate, knotting the score at three. The Penmen scratched out a run in the fifth and held on for the win.
On the hill for Pace, Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) went the distance, allowing eight hits and four runs, while fanning three.
In the nightcap, the Penmen took control of the game in the first, sending 10 batters to the plate, scoring five times for an early lead. The Setters took advantage of two Penmen errors in the second to score a run but could not get anymore in the inning. Pace scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not overcome the Penmen lead, and lost in five innings as rain forced an early end to the game.
Kim Troiano (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) started, tossing 3 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and five runs (two earned). Kinyon pitching one inning, givinup six hits and five runs (two earned).
The Setters return to action when they travel Waltham, MA to
take on Northeast-10 Conference opponent Bentley College on Sunday,
April 29 for a twin bill with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm.
