SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO BRYANT

SMITHFIELD, RI - The Pace softball team got swept in a doubleheader against the Bulldogs of Bryant University in Northeast-10 Conference action. Pace fell in the opener 9-1 and dropped game two 5-3. The Setters drop to 8-6 overall and open conference play at 0-2, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-4 and remain unbeaten in the NE-10 at 4-0.

The Setters were limited to one hit in the opener as Bryant's Janine Enos (Wareham, MA) pitched a complete game, striking out eight in five innings. The Bulldogs capitalized on three Pace errors to score nine runs but only one was earned. Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) picked up the hard-luck loss as she tossed four plus innings, allowing five hits and one earned run, while recording one strikeout. The lone Pace hit came from Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills, CO/Conifer) whose run scoring single in the first inning accounted for the lone Setter score of the day. For Bryant, Kate Thomas (Bedford, NH) went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs, including a two run triple in the first and a home run in the fifth inning.

In the nightcap, Trish Allutto's (Matawan, NJ/Matawan) solo homerun in the second innings gave the Setters a short-lived 1-0 lead. Bryant responded in the bottom of the second with two runs and tacked on one in the third and in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Pace sliced the lead to one in the six as Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) led off with a single and scored on a RBI double by Sarah Meleney (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery). Frisbie's run scoring single drove in Meleney to cut the Bryant lead to 4-3. The Bulldogs would tack on a run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the sweep.

On the hill, Alicia Parlon (Norton, MA/Norton) tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and five earned runs, while striking out two. For Bryant, Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, PA) threw a five hitter with two strikeouts.

The Setters return to action when they travel to Easton, MA for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 30 scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
