SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLE DIP WITH CONFERENCE FOE SAINT ANSELM

BRIARCLIFF, NY - Freshman Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) picked up her fourth win of the season, helping lead the Pace University softball team to a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader split against the Hawks of Saint Anselm College. The Hawks took the opener 2-0, while the Setters earned the split taking game two 3-2. Pace moves to 15-13 overall on season and 4-8 in the NE-10, while St. Anselm goes to 9-9 on the year and 3-5 in conference play.

Rescigno (4-3) was solid on the mound for Pace pitching the complete game allowing two runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out one in seven innings of work. Her counterpart, sophomore Megan Lemire (Worcester, MA) took the loss allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, walking one, in six innings.

Pace got on the board early scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a grounder by classmate Patti Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) that was bobbled by the second baseman. Both runners would advance a base on a sacrifice bunt, which then set up another sacrifice bunt by senior Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills, CO/Conifer) that allowed Pane to score from third beating out the throw to the plate from the third baseman. Senior DJ Ketchel (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) would later single through the right side bringing home Hurley.

The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the sixth, as the Hawks would put a run on the board. Junior Brittney Birch (Bradford, MA) led off the inning with a single up the middle and would move to third on a bunt. Birch would come in to score on a grounder from freshman Jaclyn Giannino (Beverly, MA) that was misplayed by the shortstop. The Setters would answer with their third and final run of the ballgame in their half of the sixth, as senior Kelly Kinyon (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) doubled to deep left bringing home Frisbie.

St. Anselm threatened in the top of the seventh as freshman Liz LeBrun's (Rowley, MA) homerun over the left field wall cut their deficit to 3-2, but that's as close as the Hawks would get as Rescigno finished off the complete game.

Sophomore Katie Corey (Weymouth, MA) was brilliant on the mound for the Hawks in the opener, tossing a complete game shutout scattering five hits. Kinyon (1-1) started for Pace going 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking four and striking out three. Freshman Alicia Parlon (Norton, MA/Norton) came in relief striking out the only batter she faced.

Scoreless through the first four innings, the Hawks got on the board in the top of the fifth inning as junior Katherine Theodorou's (Glen Cove, NY) RBI double to deep center brought home Birch to break the scoreless game. St. Anselm would tack on their second and final run in the top of the seventh as freshman Krista Merrill (Portland, ME) scored on a wild pitch.

Pace returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 13th, as the Setters will host the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Pace Field on the Briarcliff campus of Pace University. St. Anselm will also be in NE-10 action tomorrow, as they will travel to Worcester, MA to take on Assumption College.
