SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM SAINT MICHAEL'S
BRIARCLIFF, NY - Kelly Kinyon (Levittown, PA/Harry S Truman) went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with a homerun as the Setters swept Saint Michael's 6-3 and 8-4. The Setters improve to 17-13 overall and 6-8 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights drop to 7-12 and 1-9 in conference play.
In the opener, Saint Michael's took advantage of the Setter error in the second to push across an unearned run for an early 1-0 lead. Pace came right back in the bottom half of the inning as they would score four times behind timely hits from Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) and Trish Allutto (Matawan, NJ/Matawan). Shada would drive in Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills, CO/Conifer) with the tying run and Allutto's two run double would put the Setters up 3-1, eventually adding another run for a 4-1 lead after two. Pace would add some insurance runs in the fourth as Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) ripped a single to center scoring Allutto and DJ Ketchel (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic), who both singled to start the inning.
On the mound, Shada (7-6) tossed a complete game, scattering nine hits, while striking out six to move her record over the .500 mark. For the Purple Knights, Kelly Eagan (Milford, MA) suffered the loss (1-4), allowing 10 hits and six runs (five earned) over three innings of work. Katie Wry (Underhill, VT) tossed a two-hitter over the final three innings.
The Setters struck first in the nightcap as Kinyon blasted a solo homerun in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Saint Michael's would load the bases in the fifth but only managed to push across the tying run to knot the game a one.
Pace, held to two hits through five innings, exploded in the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate and got seven runs on seven hits to take an 8-1 lead. Kinyon and Pane each had key hits in the inning as the duo each had a two-run single. Saint Michael's would respond in the seventh getting three runs but Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) was able to close the door on the rally, giving the Setters a sweep.
On the hill, Alicia Parlon (Norton, MA/Norton) started, going the first 4 2/3 innings allowing one run on four hits, striking out one. Rescigno (4-3) went the final 2 1/3 allowing three runs on six hits and struck out two. For Saint Michael's, Megan O'Conner (Georgetown, MA) tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs (four earned), while striking out five. Wry faced one batter in the sixth, retiring the lone batter she faced.
The Setters return to action when they host the Golden Knights
of Saint Rose Tuesday, April 15 for a Northeast-10 Conference
doubleheader scheduled for a 3:00 pm start on Pace's Briarcliff
campus.
