SOFTBALL EARNS FIFTH SEED IN UPCOMING NE-10 TOURNAMENT
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - After a three-year hiatus from postseason play, the Pace University softball team, currently ranked 9th in the NCAA Division II Softball Northeast Region Poll, will be competing in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament this weekend, hosted by the top seed Le Moyne College. The Setters received the fifth seed behind a 16-12 finish in conference and will open the tournament against the fourth seeded River Hawks of the University of Massachusetts Lowell tomorrow, Saturday, May 3rd. Pace's last appearance in the conference tournament came during the 2004 season.
The Setters and River Hawks lone meeting of the season came last Friday, April 25th, with Pace sweeping the doubleheader series, 2-0 and 4-1.
This season, Pace has been led by junior Christina Pane's (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) breakout year, leading the Setters in nearly every offensive category. Her .433 batting average, 69 hits, 39 runs scored, 29 RBI, .611 slugging percentage, .471 on base percentage, six triples, 96 total bases and 12 stolen bases are all tops on the team. In the NE-10, Pane is tied for the league lead in triples, second in hits, third in batting, runs scored and total bases and fifth in slugging and stolen bases. Pane also broke Pace's all-time single season hits record in the Setters regular season finale against Bentley College, on Sunday, April 27th.
Junior Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) has been the centerpiece of the Setters pitching staff this season compiling a 13-8 record with a 1.93 ERA in 22 appearances (21 starts). She has recorded 20 complete games, to go with three shutouts. In 149.0 innings pitched this season, Shada has allowed 41 earned runs, 139 hits and 28 walks, while striking out 96 batters. In the NE-10, Shada ranks first in innings pitched, tied for second in wins, fourth in strikeouts and sixth in ERA.
