SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH A PAIR OF WINS OVER SHAW
RALEIGH, NC- The Pace softball team opened their 2009 with a twin bill sweep over the Bears of Shaw University. The Setters took game one 21-3 and finished off the sweep with a 16-1 victory in the nightcap. The Setters open the season at 2-0, while the Bears fall to 0-6. Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with two triples, four RBIs and three runs scored.
The Setters dominated the double dip as freshman Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free) make her collegiate debut, collecting six hits in nine at-bats with two doubles, two runs scores, a homerun and five RBIs. Trish Allutto (Matawan, NJ/Matawan Regional) scored a team-high five runs in the two games, while going 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Pace blasted four homeruns on the day with Bell, Kerri McLean (Woodhaven, NY/Archbishop Molloy), Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) and Nicole Schultheis (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) each went yard on the double dip.
On the mound, Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) (1-0) tossed three shutout and hitless innings in the opener, while striking out five. Samantha Poulsen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) pitched two innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out two. In the nightcap, Alicia Parlon (Norton, MA/ Norton) (1-0) went three innings, giving up one run on three hits and fanning six. Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) closed out the final two innings of shutout ball. striking out three.
Pace returns to action when they travel to Hampton, VA for the three-day Hampton University Tournament starting on Friday, March 20. The Setters will open up the tournament against Barton College at noon and will square off against Queensborough CC at 2 pm.
