SETTERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST MERRIMACK COLLEGE

BRIARCLIFF, NY- The Pace University softball team forced a split in a NE-10 doubleheader against Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon at Pace Field. Pace won the first game 3-0, while the Warriors took the second by the score of 8-5.

At the end of the day the Setters move to 21-20 for the season, and 15-9 in the NE-10 Conference. The Warriors will move to 24-16 overall on the year, and 17-9 in conference play.

Pace's ace Kiryl Shada (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) (13-10) was brilliant as she kept the Warriors offense guessing all day long. Shada pitched a six hit complete game shutout as she got the Setters off to a good start in the doubleheader.

The Setters got all their scoring for the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Patricia Hurley (Assonet, MA/Apponequet) got the inning started as she singled up the middle with one out. Tiffany Ott (Broad Channel, NY/Archbishop Molloy) kept the inning going with a two out walk to bring Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) to the plate. Bell got a hold of one, and drilled a three-run homerun to left center to give Pace a 3-0 after four innings.

This would be all the offense Shada would need as she only got stronger as the game went on guiding the Setters to a 3-0 win.

The second game of the day was more of a slugfest as the two teams combined for 13 runs on 23 hits.

Merrimack wasted no time taking control of this game in the top of the first inning as they scored three runs on three hits off Pace starter Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) to take a early 3-0 lead.

Pace got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Amanda Dague (Houston, TX/Klein Collins) started the inning with a one out single up the middle. She then scored on the very next play as Hurley drilled an RBI double to left center to make the score 4-1 Merrimack after three innings.

The comeback was on in the bottom of the sixth inning as Pace kept fighting, and brought the score to 4-3 after six innings. The Setters got their runs in the inning off a Vanessa Maloney (New Milford, CT/New Milford) RBI double to left center, and a Larissa Porcelli (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) RBI single to third base.

Merrimack dashed all the hopes for a Pace comeback as they responded with a grand slam by Monique Gosselin in the top of the seventh to put them ahead 8-3, and they would hold on to win 8-5.

The Setters will be back in action tomorrow as they will host Bentley College in a doubleheader on senior day. The first game will start at 12:00 p.m.
