Coach Stabile Reaches 600-Win Plateau as Softball Sweeps Assumption

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.-  Pace Softball Head Coach Claudia Stabile posted her 600th career victory as the Setters swept a doubleheader over the Greyhounds of Assumption College. In her 32nd season at the helm of the Pace Softball program, Coach Stabile ranks 25th among active winningest coaches in Division II and is among the top-50 all-time in Division II history in victories. Pace took the opener 9-0 in five innings for win #599 and completed the historic afternoon with a 9-6 victory in the nightcap to give Coach Stabile her milestone 600th win. The Setters advance to 14-16 overall and 6-10 in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division, pulling to within one game of the final playoff spot with five division games remaining. Assumption falls to 11-24-1 overall and 6-11 in division play.

In the opener, Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) tallied an early two-run homerun in the opening inning to get the Setters offense off to a strong start. Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) and Erin Wood (Dover Plains, NY/Dover) added RBI doubles in the second inning as part of a three-run frame. The Setters capped off the game in the fifth with four runs as Wood drove in another run with a double, while Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) drove in two runs with a double.

The Setters collected 13 hits in the opener as Drury, Buchbinder and Katie Lange (Upland, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) all went 2-for-3 with Wood going 2-for-2 in the game. Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) put on an impressive performance on the mound as she struck out three and allowed only one hit in a complete game effort.   

In the nightcap, the Setters again used the long ball to take the win. Gellos blasted her second homerun of the afternoon with a three-run shot in the first inning. Rachael McMahon (Corona, CA/Esperanza) added a solo homerun in the third inning for a 4-0 Pace lead.

Assumption got two runs back in the fourth but the Setters added to their lead in the bottom of the innings. Buchbinder drove in a run with a double, while Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) singled in another run for a 6-2 lead. In the fifth, the Setters hit their third homerun of the game as Lange hit a two-run shot to stake Pace to an 8-2 lead. The Greyhounds scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh but Fisher came on in relief and closed the door on a comeback.

In the nightcap, McMahon went 3-for-4 with Wright and Gellos both went 2-for-4 in the game. Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) started, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out three to even her record at 8-8. Fisher earned her first save of the season as she tossed the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and struck out three.

The Setters will travel to Caldwell College on Sunday, April 21 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
