VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MERCY IN FIVE, 3-2

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University women's volleyball team opened their 2007 campaign with a heartbreaking loss to local non-conference rival Mercy College tonight at the Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The visiting Mavericks took the first two games 30-26 and 30-28, but the Setters would force a fifth game taking the next two games 30-16 and 31-29. Mercy would take the hard fought match winning the final game 19-17. The Mavericks improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Setters drop to 0-1.

Junior Korena Johnson (Friendswood, TX/Clear Brook) led the Pace attack with team-highs in kills with 12 and digs with 21, to go along with three service aces, while classmate Danielle Furka (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) chipped in with 10 kills and 20 digs, to go along with a team leading four service aces. Sophomore Stephanie Aboagye (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) and freshman Sianna Johnson (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) each posted nine kills and three service aces. Aboagye also recorded 19 digs, while Sianna Johnson recorded six total blocks.

Setting up the Setter attack was senior Ashley D'Agostini (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines) who recorded a team-best 38 assists, to go along with 14 digs and eight kills.

Pace returns to action this Saturday, September 8th when they travel to Colchester, VT to take on the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball play. The match-up is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
