VOLLEYBALL GOES 0-3 AT THE QUEENS COLLEGE TOURNAMENT

 

FLUSHING, NY - The Pace University women's volleyball team dropped three straight matches over the weekend at the Queens College Tournament, falling to 7-11 overall on the season.

The Setters fell 3-0 (22-30, 23-30, 21-30) in their opening match on Friday afternoon against host Queens. Junior Danielle Furka (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) led the Pace attack recording a team-high six kills, to go along with 10 digs. Stephanie Aboagye (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern), Korena Johnson (Friendswood, TX/Clear Brook) and Rebecca DePaoli (Brewster, NY/North Salem) all chipped in with five kills apiece. Samantha Gellman (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) set up the Pace attack with a team-high 11 assists, while Stephanie Kazmierczak (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) added a game-high 16 digs.

For Queens, Natalie Edward recorded a game-high 17 kills, while Marianna Megas added a game-high 31 assists. Shannon Kelly chipped in with a team-high 13 digs. Queens improved to 9-8 on the season with the win.

In their second game on Friday night, the Setters fell 3-0 again (19-30, 22-30, 29-31) to the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez. Aboagye recorded a team-high 11 kills, while Furka added a double-double with 10 kills and a team-best 18 digs to go along with three service aces. Kazmierczak and K. Johnson added 13 and 11 assists respectively, while Jessica Anderson (East Northport, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) chipped in with 14 digs.

Pace lost a nail-bitting third match on Saturday afternoon falling to Mercy College in five games 3-2 (30-26, 20-30, 22-30, 30-25, 15-17).  Furka led Pace recording her second double-double of the tournament with a team-high 12 kills to go along with 11 digs. Freshman Sianna Johnson (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) chipped in with 11 kills. K. Johnson also recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs, to go along with eight kills and three service aces. Freshman Victoria Pompilus (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon) also added eight kills with a .429 hitting percentage. Aboagye, Kazmierczak and DePaoli finished with 13, 12, and 11 digs respectively, while Anderson added a team-best 36 digs. Pace finished the match with 99 digs and nine team blocks.

Pace returns to action on Friday, October 19th when the Setters travel to Manchester, NH as they take on Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
