SAINT ROSE DEFEATS PACE 78-72

 

Junior guard Mary Lewis (Roxbury, MA/Tabor Academy) recorded 18 points and eight rebounds to lead four players in double digit scoring as The College of Saint Rose defeated Pace, 78-72 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

 

 

  Pace (10-3/5-3 NE-10) scored the first three points of the game, all on free throws, before building up a three-point lead, 10-7 at the 14:37 mark on a jumper by junior forward Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY/Oswego). Saint Rose (8-5/4-4 NE-10) then took the lead, 13-11, at 11:18 after junior guard Linsey Onishuk (Hyde Park, MA/Boston Latin Academy) converted a jump shot in the paint.

 

The Golden Knights were able to stretch the lead out to 11, 25-14, as freshman forward Ashley Anderson (Portland, ME/Portland) handed out one of her career-high six assists to Lewis with 7:26 left in the first stanza. The Setters then set out on an 8-0 run to cut the lead back to one, 27-26 with less than a minute to go.

Junior forward Ariel Davis (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) responded, hitting a jumper with 21 ticks on the clock to put Saint Rose up three, 29-26. Wallace could only hit one of two shots from the charity stripe for Pace with one second left to send the teams to the locker room with the Golden Knights up by two, 29-27.

 

 

  Coming back from halftime, Pace took a two-point lead, 37-35 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Andrea Padelsky (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) at 17:36. Sophomore guard Emily Gottstein (Albany, NY/Holy Names) responded with a three of her own to give the Golden Knights back the lead, 38-37 at 16:26. Four straight free throws by the Setters gave Pace back the advantage, 44-42, at 13:15, but Saint Rose freshman guard Dana Brown (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) scored five straight points to give the game back to the Golden Knights.

 

 

 

Saint Rose was able to build up a 13 point lead, 66-53 with just more than eight minutes left as Brown, who scored a career-high 12 points, converted the second of two free throws. Pace cut the deficit back to single digits, getting within nine, 66-57 at the 7:02 mark, but could not get any closer than five for the rest of the way.

 

 

  Gottstein finished with 14 points while Onishuk added 13 for the Golden Knights. Senior center Petra Kulhankova (Nova Paka, Czech Republic) netted nine points and seven rebounds.

 

 

 

Wallace led a quartet of Pace players scoring in double digits, netting 18 points. Sophomore guard Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) added 17 while senior guard Maria Brown (Frederick, MD/Frederick) chipped in with 13. Padelsky scored 10 for the Setters.

   

 

Pace returns to action on Saturday, January 7th when they face off against Southern Connecticut State University, 1:30 p.m.
