Setters Stave Off UMass Lowell, 66-60

 
LOWELL, MA (Jan. 16, 2006) – Senior G Maria Brown (Frederick, MD) came off the bench to score 18 points and grab six rebounds as Pace University defeated UMass Lowell, 66-60, Monday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at Costello Gym.

The loss was the third straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 5-12 overall and 4-8 in the NE-10. The Setters improved to 12-4 overall and 7-4 in the Conference. UML visits Southern Connecticut Thursday while Pace hosts Franklin Pierce. Both games tip off at 5:30.

Senior C Emily Kordas (Hillsboro, NH) led UML with 17 points, six steals and four rebounds while shooting 8 for 14 from the field. Senior G Mariette Guillaume (Audubon, PA) added 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Brown converted 7 of 11 field goals to lead the Setters while senior G Jesse Dlabola (Levittown, NY) added 16 points, hitting 9 of 10 free throws. Junior F Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY) chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Setters outscored UML 23-6 at the free throw line and outscored the UML bench 25-11.

Pace led 59-51 with 56 seconds left to play when UML senior G Sacha Simms (New Market, MD) buried a 3-point shot to cut the lead to 59-54. However, the Setters converted 7 of 8 free throws over the final 35 seconds to secure the win.

Pace led at the break 30-21, but UML opened the second half with a 16-8 run to cut the lead to one (38-37) with 12:48 remaining. Leading 47-43 with 6:39 left, Dlabola and Brown each converted layups to give Pace a 52-43 cushion with 4:56 left.

UML twice cut the lead to five points, but could get no closer.
