NO. 16 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO PACE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 26, 2006)

Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained four of her five three-point attempts and totaled 16 points as Pace University upended No. 16 American International College 62-56 in Northeast-10 women’s basketball at Butova Gymnasium Thursday evening. The win, Pace’s sixth in a row, improves them to 16-4 overall and 11-4 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped their first game at home this season and are now 15-4 and 10-4 in the league.

Jesse Dlabola (Levittown, N.Y.) and Ashley Wallace (Oswego, N.Y.) each finished with 10 points for Pace while Maria Brown (Frederick, Md.) added nine points and seven rebounds off the bench. Sharmion Selman (Burlington, Vt.) led all scorers for American International with 22 points and seven rebounds, going 9-18 from the floor, while Debbie Sampson (Brockton, Mass.) added 11 points off the bench. Krystal Pressley(New Haven, Conn.) finished with nine points.

AIC trailed 39-26 at halftime but opened the second stanza on a 12-4 run and a basket by Selman with 13:30 to go made it 43-38. The Setters would use a 7-2 spurt to reclaim a 10-point advantage with 9:35 on the clock, but a 12-4 run for the Yellow Jackets capped by a free throw by Alissa Rubino (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) with 4:09 left made it 54-52.

The hosts trailed 56-54 with just under two minutes left and had the ball but would come up empty on their next trip down the floor. A three-pointer by Dlabola was off the mark for Pace, and at the other end a trifecta attempt by Rubino missed with 47 seconds to go. The Setters would seal the win by making all six of their free throw attempts in the final 45 seconds of the game.

American International led 9-0 just 1:43 into the contest after connecting on its first four shots from the floor. The Setters would gradually reel the Yellow Jackets back in and an 8-0 run capped by an Andrea Padelsky (Lebanon, Pa.) three with 9:09 before halftime made it 20-16 in favor of the guests. Pace, which shot 50% (7-14) from behind the arc and 48.3% overall in the opening 20 minutes, took a 39-26 lead into the locker room after Dlabola converted a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left before the break.

Pace shot 42.3% from the floor for the contest and limited the Yellow Jackets to 32.8% shooting and AIC connected on just three of 22 three-point attempts. The Setters were able to overcome being outrebounded 41-37 and committing 20 turnovers.

AIC travels to UMass Lowell for a 2:00 contest on Saturday.
