WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTCH FIFTH STRAIGHT HOME WIN
SHEPPARD'S CAREER HIGH 14 REBOUNDS KEYS SETTER VICTORY
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace University women's basketball team defeated the River Hawks of UMass-Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up, 54-47, at the Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The Setters improve to 13-4 overall, 8-4 in the NE-10, running their home record to 9-1, while the Warriors drop to 5-10 and 1-10 in conference play.
The River Hawks struck early, building a 21-15 lead with 4:32 left in the opening period. Megan Berry led the way for the River Hawks, notching 14 points, shooting 4-for-6 from three-point land. The Setters rallied with a 13-2 run to close out the half, as Jauna Andrews (Augusta ME/Cony) scored six points, including the tying bucket at the 2:24 mark. Taylor Losey (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) nailed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Setters ahead for good and give Pace a 28-23 lead at the break.
Pace pulled away early in the final period, using a 16-10 run to stretch their halftime advantage to 46-33 midway through the final period as Hannah Sheppard (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free) scored seven points in the run, including a three-pointer to cap off the rally. The River Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to cut the Setter lead to three with 1:26 left in the game. UMass-Lowell could not get any closer as Liran Buchris (Massad, Israel/Great Neck South) went 2-for-2 and Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY/Oswego) converted 1-for-2 from the charity stripe in the final minute of play to key the River Hawks at bay. Wallace added a lay-up with 30 seconds to go to cap the Setter scoring on the afternoon and give Pace a 54-47 victory.
For Pace, Sheppard recorded a double-double with 18 points and a career-high 14 boards, while shooting 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from long range. Wallace scored 10 points, while Buchris tallied eight points, four boards and four assists. Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) finished with five points, four boards and a game-high five assists. The Setter bench was keyed by Andrews who netted eight points and grabbed three rebounds, while Losey notched five points and four caroms as the Setter bench outscored the Lowell bench 13-8.
For the River Hawks, Berry was the lone player to notch double-figures in points, finishing with a game-high 20 points and four rebounds. Antonnea Robinson tallied nine points, two boards and a pair of steals.
