WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OUTLASTS LE MOYNE IN
NE-10 FIRST ROUND
SETTERS ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS TO FACE #3 AMERICAN INT'L
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The #6-seeded Pace University women's basketball team defeated the #11 seed Le Moyne College, 61-51, in the First Round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament at the Goldstein Fitness Center on Pace's Pleasantville campus. The Setters improve to 21-7 overall, while the Dolphins drop to 9-19.
The Dolphins took an early lead on the Setters, taking a 15-10 advantage midway through the opening period. Pace rallied with a 9-2 run to take a two-point lead on Laura Mooney's (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) three-pointer with 5:10 left in the first half. Le Moyne knotted the game at 19-19 a few minutes later but the Setters would take the lead for good on a Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) lay-up. Klingele added a trifecta with less than 10 seconds to go in the half to give the Setters a 24-19 lead at the break.
The Setters and Dolphins exchanged baskets throughout much of the early action in the final period, as Pace built a 43-35 lead with just under eight minutes left in the game. Le Moyne rallied with a 9-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Courtney Corea, to cut the Setter lead to one at 45-44 with 3:49 to go. Pace closed the door on the Dolphins, using a 16-7 run to end the game and advance to the quarterfinals. Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY/Oswego) had a key three-point play in the Setters' final run, while also converting 3-of-4 free throws in the final 1:01, while Liran Buchris (Massad, Israel/Great Neck South) hit a pair from the charity stripe to seal the win for Pace.
For the Setters, Wallace led the way, finishing with a team-high 18 points, while grabbing seven boards. Buchris chipped in 15 points and five assists, while Hannah Sheppard (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free) netted nine points and recorded a game-high nine boards. Klingele finished with nine points, seven of which came in the opening half.
For Le Moyne, Coryea tallied game-highs in points with 23 points and boards with nine. Katie Dunn netted nine points, while adding three rebounds. Kim Wagoner added seven points, three assists and a pair of rebounds.
The Setters return to action on when they travel to Springfield,
MA to take on #3 seed American International College on Tuesday,
February 27 at 7:00 pm in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament
Quarterfinals.
