WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS NYIT, 44-38 IN SEASON OPENER

 

PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace University women's basketball team defeated the New York Institute of Technology Bears in a non-conference match-up, by the score of 44-38, tonight at the Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The Setters improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-1.

The first half saw some early action as both teams traded baskets, but the Bears would eventually take a 24-16 lead at the half with the help of a 16-8 run over the final ten minutes. Nicole Mathews (Brooklyn, NY/Fulten-Montgomery CC) lead the Bears as she scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the first half. Alex Pijeaux (Stone Mountain, GA/Georgia Southern) also chipped in six of her 10 points in the first half.

The Setters would quickly erase the first half deficit, as they opened up the second half with a 12-3 run, highlighted by a jumper from Liran Buchris (Massad, Isreal/Great Neck South) with 13:35 remaining, to give the Setters the lead for good. The Setters second half serge was led by Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) as she scored all of her eight points in the second half. Hannah Sheppard (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free) also helped the Setters run as she dropped in five of her team-high nine points in the second half. Sheppard also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Setters return to action on Friday, November 17th, when they open up conference play and host the Saint Anselm Hawks in a Northest-10 Conference match-up. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
