Volleyball Upended In Five-Set Heartbreaker
PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace Volleyball team took a two set lead against Northeast-10 Conference opponent Franklin Pierce before being upended in a five set heartbreaker 3-2 by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 12-25, 25-27, 14-16.
The Setters (4-23, 0-11 NE-10) fell behind early as the Ravens jumped out to a 18-7 lead in the first set. Pace then ripped off 18 of the next 21 points in order to take the set 25-21. Key in the comeback were seven kills by freshman Kayla Witwer (Southlake, TX/Carroll) and nine digs from sophomore Rebecca Italiano (East Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway).
Pace kept the momentum going in the second frame, winning 25-16 behind six kills from freshman Ashley DiFulvio (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge). The momentum started to turn in the third set as Franklin Pierce won 25-12. The Ravens then took a 17-9 lead in the fourth before Pace rallied to knot things at 23-23. FPU would eventually hold on for a 27-25 win.
In the fifth, the Setters once again battled back, turning a 10-5 deficit into a 14-14 tie before Franklin Pierce came away with the 16-14 win.
For the match, DiFulvio and Witwer led Pace with 16 kills each with the latter contributing 20 digs. Italiano had 34 digs in the contest while freshman Miki Carver (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook) had 39 assists.
The Setters are in action next on Friday, November 8 when they travel to Worcester, MA to take on Assumption in an NE-10 match at 7:00 pm.
